Dear Dr. Chidambaram, thank you for a wonderful web page. I graduated from Madras Medical College in 1956, and later emigrated to the USA. At that time I was able to secure a transcript of my education at MMC, which helped me get a license in Minn and in Texas. Now I am desperately waiting to get a license in New Mexico, and they want a verification sent directly to the Federation Credentials Verification Board,in FDt. Worth, TX, which is an association of many state boards. The FCVS sent MMC a request nearly 3 months ago to the Dean of MMC and he has not responded to them. The FCVS also sent the Dean a prepaid FedEX envelope for the reply. I also wrote to the Dean and asked him if there is a fee payable. He never replied. Two weeks ago I phoned him from the USA and he said there may be a fee of Rs. 2000/- not a big deal, but he did not remember either my letter or the FCVS request, and he suggested that I send someone there in person to expedite this matter. I am unable to send this money since the amount was not specified nor the form of the bank draft. I am 12000 miles away and I deserve a little better consideration from my Alma Mater, and from physician to another physician,particulary a teacher towards an old student. Can you assist me or advise me in any way? For those who are planning to attend class reunions in Madras, I want to make you aware of the new Indian Govt directive requiring all Indian citizens hosting foreigners (even when they are NRIs)to report their presence to the nearest police station. If they do not inform the police, the hosts are threatened with jail sentences! How is this different from what happened in the early days of Hitler's Third Reich when Germans entertaining Jewish guests/friends were required to report their activities to the local gestapo? or is this any different from Taliban's requirement that non-Muslims be tagged with a yellow piece of cloth? Taliban also says that such tagging is for the security of the non-Muslims, akin to what India's Home Ministry is saying that such reporting to the police of a foreigner's presence is to ensure his/her safety! The present directive also requires Indian NGO organizations to obtain prior permission from the Home Ministry if they are to invite foreigners (even NRIs) for seminars, meetings etc...This will make it difficult for those of us who have plans to visit India for teaching/lecturing in Indian institutions. What can we do as a group to register our dismay to Indian officials? I am sad to inform the MMC of the death of one of its graduates, my father: Dudley James Toomey IMS (MMC 1933 - 1938. (b. 1915 q. 1938 d. 29/9/99) He qualified with the gold medals in surgery and obstetrics and was an outstanding athlete winning many trophies in the 1937/38 university games. He went on to become a general surgeon in Gibraltar, qualified with FRCS (Glas) FRCS (Edin) FACS and was awarded the OBE for his services to medicine.
